Modern Outdoor Living for the Whole Family

Every yard has potential- it just takes the right plan to bring it to life. This young family has been investing in giving their Pittsburgh home a modern look. They wanted to take the outside of their home to the next level. This meant overhauling their mulch beds with a new design, installing a new patio, gas fire pit, walkway, and removing trees- a total transformation. We took something that looked a little outdated and turned it into a modern, functional space for relaxing and entertaining. Here’s how we made it happen.
The Challenge
A backyard with trees running down the middle isn't ideal with a handful of kids looking for plenty of space to play. In addition, all around the house were mulch beds with aging plants full of grown cover- not the updated look this family was looking for. We needed to create a space that would blend fun and relaxation- where they could host friends and watch the kids play- all with a clean, modern look.
The Solution
We got to work designing a space that would be beautiful, low maintenance, and family-friendly. Here’s what we did:
Clearing the space
The first step was removing old trees in the middle of the yard that were crowding space and blocking light. This opened up the yard and set the stage for a new design.
Building a Custom Patio with a Gas Fire Pit
When you have a young family, the last thing you want to do when you’re ready to relax is search for firewood and struggle to start a fire. The answer: installing a gas fire pit that with the turn of a key is ready to go. What do you need for a fire pit like this? A beautiful patio to install it in. We built a gorgeous patio using modern pavers with a double black border all around, surrounded by a new mulch bed blooming with florals and plants that will look great all year round. They now have a perfect place for cozy family nights or entertaining guests.
Upgraded the Walkway
Next, we installed a natural stone walkway to lead you from the front of the house to the new patio in the back. The perfect addition to such a modern patio.
Refreshing the Landscaping
Out with the old mulch beds and in with modern, low-maintenance plants! We selected 22 different plants ranging from specific hydrangea to Japanese Maples, to Coral Bells- each plant chosen with intentionality to complement the family’s contemporary style and added pops of color to brighten up the space.
The Result
The transformation was incredible. Even now when I look at the before pictures I am amazed with our work. We really created an outdoor retreat that is personalized for this family. The patio is perfect for roasting marshmallows, the yard is open, and the landscaping is sharp and makes maintenance a breeze.
